The Pillars of Creation This may be one of the most recognized Hubble images. They have been combined here in a multi-wavelength image which reveals never-before-seen detail in the dusty portion of the galaxy. With its high resolution, the Hubble Space Telescope is able to view details of star formation in the LMC as easily as ground-based telescopes are able to observe stellar formation within our own Milky Way galaxy. As NASA explains in a new blog post, this new image dump bumps up the number of Caldwell objects that Hubble has observed to 87. The Heritage astronomers, in collaboration with scientists in Texas and Ireland, used Hubble's Wide Field Planetary Camera 2 (WFPC2) to obtain this colour image. Each of Hubble’s images of the Antennae Galaxies has been better than the last, due to upgrades made during the famous servicing missions, the last of which took place in 2009. The image features the planet’s trademark Great Red Spot and a more intense colour palette in the clouds swirling in the planet’s turbulent atmosphere than seen in previous years. The NASA/ESA Hubble Space Telescope has snapped the best ever image of the Antennae Galaxies. It is thought that the smaller galaxy has actually passed through the larger one. At the centre of the region is a brilliant star cluster called NGC 346. The effect, called a light echo, has been unveiling never-before-seen dust patterns ever since the star suddenly brightened for several weeks in early 2002. This dramatic image offers a peek inside a cavern of roiling dust and gas where thousands of stars are forming. To celebrate the 30th anniversary of the Hubble Space Telescope, NASA has published dozens of new images of what it describes as 30 "celestial gems." This wide variety of stars allows a thorough study of star formation processes. The gravitational lens produced by the massive galaxy cluster in the foreground (the yellow mostly elliptical galaxies scattered across the image) bends the light rays in a way that can stretch the images and so amplify the brightness of the light rays from more distant galaxies. Far away in the Ursa Major constellation is a swirling galaxy that would not look out of place on a coffee made by a starry-eyed barista. Hubble's view of the Carina Nebula shows star birth in a new level of detail. The barred spiral galaxy NGC 1672, showing up clusters of hot young blue stars along its spiral arms, and clouds of hydrogen gas glowing in red. However, German astronomer Johann Gottfried Koehler is credited with discovering the galaxy just days before Messier added it to his collection. Each pixel in this high-resolution image spans about 119 kilometres in Jupiter's atmosphere. These are called reflection nebulae. The galaxy's hallmark is a brilliant white, bulbous core encircled by the thick dust lanes comprising the spiral structure of the galaxy. Hubble’s new observations, using its most advanced instrument, the Wide Field Camera 3, are the most detailed ever made of this galaxy. These are huge, relatively short-lived, clouds of hydrogen gas which glow due to the strong radiation from hot, young stars embedded within them; glowing pink regions of ionized hydrogen (hydrogen that has lost its electrons). The streaks of red and blue in the image highlight pockets of star formation along the pinwheeling arms, with dark dust lanes stretching across the galaxy’s starry centre. But in this picture, image processing specialists have worked to provide a crisp, extremely accurate view of Saturn, which highlights the planet's pastel colors. Constantly stormy weather occurs where these opposing east-to-west and west-to-east flows interact. The Eagle Nebula is a star-forming region of the Milky Way, which means a cold cloud of gas and dust dense enough for gravity to take hold and collapse material into new stars. This close-up view of Saturn's disc captures the transit of several moons across the face of the gas giant planet. The Hubble telescope has captured an image of an unusual edge-on galaxy, revealing remarkable details of its warped dusty disk and showing how colliding galaxies spawn the formation of new generations of stars.
